Welcome to the Chicago Cycling Club Ride Schedule!

The Chicago Cycling Club offers 3 to 4 rides a week from April through October. During the "off" season we host regular rides on December 25th and January 1st, plus other rides as weather and demand permit.  We offer a wide range of rides, with something to satisfy cyclists of any ability or interest.

You do not have to be a member to join us on a ride. However, we request that riders join our club if they have enjoyed a couple rides and plan to participate in more.

Most rides are FREE and do not require any kind of advanced registration or sign up. The schedule listing will indicate if advanced registration or any kind of fee is required.

This page contains some basic information regarding our rides. If this is your first visit to our site, please take a moment to read the entire page. It answers the most common questions we receive about our rides.

Ride Types

Chicago Cycling Club rides are categorized into four basic ride types: SOCIAL, TOUR, TRAINING and OTHER .

  • SOCIAL rides will be shorter (under 40 miles) and will typically have one or more rest/meal/point-of-interest stops. The pace will generally be conversation friendly (10-12 mph or 12-14 mph). Ride leaders and sweeps will ensure that the pace is appropriate for the slowest rider and try to keep the group together. Large groups may be split in two to accommodate multiple paces. No rider will be left alone. These rides are appropriate for almost any skill or fitness level.
  • TOUR rides will tend to be middle to longer distance rides (more than 35 miles), moderate to brisk pace (14 to 18 mph) and will usually have fewer stops (if any). Tour Ride leaders will not necessarily keep the group together.  Faster riders may go ahead of the group, slower riders may split into a second, smaller group.
  • TRAINING rides will be faster (generally over 16 mph pace), and no attempt will be made to keep the group together. It is assumed that participants on a training ride are there to be motivated to push their performance to the next level.  Riders are expected to be skilled and confident enough to be on their own if necessary.
  • OTHER rides can be just about anything. Please see the schedule listing for information on a particular ride.

Ride Pace

Each ride listing will indicate the pace (average speed while riding) for the ride.  "Average speed while riding" means the average speed while you are moving. This does not include the time spent waiting at traffic lights or stop signs.  A ride listed as a 12-14 mph pace, will probably cover 8 to 10 miles per hour, riding in the city. Rides outside of the city will generally cover more distance at the same pace.

Ride leaders will make every attempt to maintain the indicated pace. Actual pace will be determined by road, traffic and weather conditions, and the group as a whole.

Here is how various pace ratings are often described:
Slow: 10-12 mph , Leisurely: 12-14 mph , Moderate: 14-16 mph , Brisk: 16-18 mph ,
Fast: 18-20 mph , Very Fast: 20-22 mph

Ride Cancellations

Rides can be canceled by the ride leader for the following reasons:

Chance of precipitation is over 70 percent;
Temperature is over 90 degrees;
Ozone Alert has been issued;
Pollution index is high;
High Winds;
Any other severe weather is predicted or present.

If weather conditions are questionable, call the ride leader one to two hours before the ride.
