Touring Ride: The Road to Hegewisch Part 10

REMOTE START: Chicago Lakefront, 31st Street Beach house

9:00 AM

40 miles, 14 to 18 mph

Image
Ride leaders George Vrechek and Walt Choromanski return again this year with several excursions to the South - as in the southeastern portion of Chicago. We'll start the season with this ride that begins at the 31st Beach House and heads to the most remote corner of Chicago, Hegewisch, founded as a separate town in the 1880s. We'll avoid most lights and head down the lakefront via South Shore Drive, Avenue L, and the Burnham Greenway. The pace should get you sweating but not keeling over. You'll see the only lakes inside the City, the only trailer park, and the only saw mill. We'll stop for lunch at Darcy's Dog and Shrimp Shack or equivalent establishment in downtown Hegewisch. We'll come back a different way than we have in the past. Free parking can be found west of the starting point along Rhodes Avenue south of 31st Street, or ride your bike to the start to add some more miles to the trip. We'll shoot for getting back by 2PM.   Email a friend...

Social Ride: Tour of Humboldt Park

REMOTE START: Humboldt Park at the intersection of Division and California streets

1:00 PM

15 miles, 10 to 15 mph

Chicago Cycling Club, in collaboration with the ATA, the Chainlink.org, and Big Shoulders Realty represented by Lee Diamond, will be doing a neighborhood tour this month of Humboldt Park. It is community area number 23 and sits four miles west of the Loop. The tour will explore all of Humboldt Park; the neighborhood, the park, and the community area. We will visit the National Landmark namesake park and all of its buildings and major sculptures, Dwight Perkin’s Moos and Nobel schools, the Paseo Boriqua, and the home-sites of some of Chicago’s most famous figures.
Humboldt Park is a community area, a neighborhood and a huge city park. All three of these are named for Alexander von Humboldt, a German naturalist. The neighborhood extends from Western to Pulaski and from Armitage to Chicago leaving half of the total a residential neighborhood, and half a park in the community area of West Town. The community area begins at Sacramento/Humboldt on the east and is otherwise bordered by rail-lines (working and defunct). The lines include The Bloomingdale Line and Street on the north, the Union Pacific at Kinzie on the south and the Belt Railway on the west, just east of Cicero avenue. The area known as West Humboldt Park extends from Pulaski west to the other borders of the community area. The area is also home to some of the greatest work of some of the most heralded figures in Chicago and American architecture and landscape design, including William Le Baron Jenney, Jen Jensen, William Carbys Zimmerman, Dwight Perkins and Schmidt, Garden & Martin. The area is resplendent with a vibrant palette of murals and community gardens. The tour is roughly 15 miles and 4 to 5 hours in length.   Email a friend...

The ride so nice, I'm doing it twice. Get yourself registered then come out and keep me company as I complete the Bike the Drive circuit twice in preparation for the grueling CCC Memorial Day ride. Key to Pace: Each ride listing will indicate the pace (Average Miles Per Hour) for the ride. Ride leaders will make every attempt to maintain the indicated pace. Actual pace will be determined by road, traffic and weather conditions and the group as a whole.
Here is how various pace ratings are often described:

  Slow: 10-12 mph | Leisurely: 12-14 mph | Moderate: 14-16 mph Brisk: 16-18 | Fast: 18-20 | Very Fast: 20-22 mph

Rides can be canceled by the ride leader for the following reasons: The chance of precipitation is over 70 percent; the temperature is over 90 degrees; an Ozone Alert has been issued and/or the pollution index is high; any other severe weather is predicted or present the morning of the ride.   If weather conditions are questionable, call the ride leader one to two hours before the ride.
